SOCIAREM: Accelerating Solar Adoption and Citizen-Driven Energy Communities

The SOCIAREM project pioneers innovative solutions for large-scale adoption of photovoltaic (PV) systems and renewable energy communities (RECs) across Europe. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe program, SOCIAREM brings together 15 partners from 9 countries to tackle social, regulatory, technical, and economic barriers, fostering citizen engagement and accelerating the clean energy transition.

At its core, SOCIAREM will facilitate:

– The development of user-friendly tools and services to simplify solar PV adoption for citizens, energy communities, and grid operators.
– The implementation of gamification strategies, open-source energy community models, and unbiased guidance tools for consumers.
– Engagement with policymakers to streamline permitting processes and regulatory frameworks.
– Pilot demonstrations across Switzerland, Cyprus, Portugal, and Italy to validate solutions in real-world settings.

A Focus on Inclusive and Scalable Energy Solutions

SOCIAREM explores innovative approaches to promote renewable energy adoption, including energy education via serious games, blockchain-based peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading, and optimisation of energy sharing within communities. These tools aim to enhance social acceptance, foster equitable participation, and empower citizens to actively manage and share renewable energy. By bridging technology, regulation, and society, SOCIAREM contributes directly to Europe’s renewable energy targets.

Watt-IS’s Role in SOCIAREM

As part of a multidisciplinary consortium, Watt-IS contributes its expertise in AI-powered analytics and blockchain-based P2P energy trading. Integrated into WIS4Communities, Watt-IS supports the testing of innovative energy-sharing models within renewable energy communities, enabling real-time control of flexible loads, optimisation of energy flows, and fair participation of all community members.

Driving Collaboration and Innovation

SOCIAREM brings together universities, research centres, SMEs, civil society organisations, and consulting firms, combining research excellence, technological innovation, and strong outreach capacity. By piloting solutions in real-world contexts, the project ensures practical, scalable, and socially inclusive tools that can be adopted across Europe.

SOCIAREM is more than a project; it is a step toward a more inclusive, sustainable, and citizen-driven energy future, enabling communities to take an active role in the clean energy transition.
