U2DEMO

The U2DEMO project is a bold initiative aimed at redefining how Energy Communities (ECs) manage, trade, and share energy. By fostering consumer-centric Peer-to-Peer (P2P) trading and energy sharing, U2DEMO empowers individuals and communities to become active participants in the energy transition, ensuring a fairer, more sustainable future. 

With €5 million in funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe program, U2DEMO seeks to break down regulatory, technical and economic barriers that have historically hindered widespread adoption of P2P energy models. The project prioritizes equitable access to renewable energy, enhancing participation for both consumers and prosumers while maintaining security, transparency and efficiency.  

Core Objectives of U2DEMO

At its core, U2DEMO is committed to: 

• Developing open-source, scalable, and secure tools for P2P trading and Energy Sharing, ensuring accessibility across different regulatory frameworks. 
• Enhancing consumer engagement through intuitive interfaces, AI-powered decision-support algorithms, and data analytics that simplify participation. 
• Fostering trust and transparency with blockchain-based smart contracts, ensuring secure and traceable transactions. 
• Reducing energy poverty by integrating social fairness mechanisms into energy-sharing models, making sustainable energy more inclusive. 
• Optimizing grid efficiency through better coordination between ECs, Distribution System Operators (DSOs), and Transmission System Operators (TSOs).

A Focus on Testing and Innovation 

The project will implement four pilot demonstrations across diverse energy communities in Portugal, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands. These pilots will serve as real-world testbeds for advanced P2P trading and energy sharing technologies, incorporating: 

• Existing flexibility services such as demand response programs, enabling consumers to adapt energy consumption dynamically.  
• Dynamic pricing and capacity signals, allowing for optimized energy flow and improved coordination between ECs and grid operators.  
• Seamless integration with dataspaces and middleware, enhancing the exchange of information for more efficient energy management.

Watt-IS’s Role in U2Demo 

Watt-IS will play a pivotal role in the project, leveraging its expertise in user engagement and data analytics to: 

• Develop intuitive user interfaces that enhance the experience of energy community participants, along with data analytics tools for consumer engagement. 
• Create advanced settlement and billing tools to support P2P markets and quantify the benefits of energy sharing mechanisms. 
• Contributing to the design of P2P trading and energy xharing algorithms. 
• Defining technical guidelines for platform security, scalability, and interoperability.
