AI-EFFECT: Pioneering AI Innovation for the Energy Sector

The AI-EFFECT project is at the forefront of integrating Artificial Intelligence into the energy sector, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to address critical challenges in energy efficiency, grid optimization, and the seamless integration of renewable energy sources. Funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe program, this ambitious initiative aims to establish a European Testing and Experimentation Facility (TEF) for the energy sector, enabling secure development, testing, and validation of AI solutions.

At its core, the AI-EFFECT project will facilitate:

– The creation of a robust digital platform for data sharing and AI model experimentation in compliance with European data regulations.
– Development and validation of AI use cases across four pilot demonstrations in Portugal, Denmark, the Netherlands and Germany, addressing multi-energy systems, congestion management, energy efficiency, and Distributed Energy Resources (DER) integration.

A Focus on Transformative AI Applications

AI-EFFECT explores innovative applications of AI to optimize energy systems, including forecasting energy, anomaly detection in networks, simulation tools, and automation of reporting. These capabilities aim to make energy systems smarter, more efficient, and more reliable, driving decarbonization and advancing Europe’s leadership in the energy transition.

Watt-IS’s Role in AI-EFFECT

As part of a consortium of 19 European organizations, Watt-IS plays a key role in the development and execution of the Portuguese demonstration pilot. In collaboration with CEVE – Cooperativa Eléctrica do Vale d’Este and INESC TEC, Watt-IS focuses on making available AI-powered energy efficiency tools, optimize Renewable Energy Communities operation with dynamic sharing coefficients and real time control of flexible loads to address flexibility requests from the DSO, that align with EU goals for sustainability and innovation.

Driving Collaboration and Innovation

The AI-EFFECT platform will enable stakeholders to safely test AI solutions before their deployment in real-world scenarios, ensuring compliance with European data-sharing and AI regulations. By fostering collaboration between AI developers, energy operators, and research institutions, the project sets the stage for transformative innovation across Europe.

AI-EFFECT is more than a project; it is a step toward a resilient, efficient, and sustainable energy future, placing Europe at the forefront of the AI-driven energy revolution.
